Moulin Rouge in Boston

I was introduced to the world of Moulin Rouge! in the Summer of 2018 when I saw the out-of-town tryout production in Boston at the Emerson Colonial Theatre.

My mother and I were fortunate enough to snag seats in what was then the Sparkling Diamond section, which mimicked burlesque club table seating, mere inches from the stage. To say that the show took my breath away would be an understatement, and it has since become one of my favorite musicals.

Thus, I used my love for the production as inspiration for my first infographic project. Keep scrolling to learn more about my design process, and to see the final project in greater detail!

Using a stunning production photo as the source of my main imagery, I made a rough sketch to decide how I would lay out my information sections, and then I got to work designing. To make sure my infographic was representative of the production’s spectacular essence, I carefully studied the show’s visual branding and made my font and color choices accordingly.

Almost every asset in the infographic was digitally drawn by hand using my iPad, and the illustrations were then transferred to Adobe Illustrator to be compiled and organized. This included each individual star, spotlight, stage element, plus the Bohemian cityscape, Eiffel Tower, and heart set pieces. I also created the title design, adjusting certain elements to fit the context.

In order to create my main graph, I first listened to Elephant Love Medley upwards of 100 times to map out how much time each of the 20 songs featured took up in the entire medley. I then adjusted my findings proportionally in order to create the final stacked column graph. Though time-consuming, and detrimental to my Spotify algorithm, it was such a unique set of “data” to represent visually, and I’m so happy with how it turned out!
